How Much is a Used Washer and Dryer?

Having your own washer and dryer set is a delightful luxury. You can wash as many loads of clothes as you want, whenever you want. You can do other chores, watch TV, or even run errands while the machines run, and you don't have to monitor your loads in a shared laundry room.

For most, the first step to enjoying a washer and dryer is to find an apartment with laundry hookups. This open space with plumbing and high-powered outlets is your opportunity to set up your own laundry room and take control of your linens. The question is: How much will it cost to buy a used washer and dryer?

Washer and Dryer Price Range

To buy a matching washer and dryer, your price could range anywhere from $200 to $5,000. That's a big difference, we know. But that difference spans all the way from old workhorse machines bought from a neighbor to a brand new matching set with all the bells and whistles.

Right now, the average price for a new washer-dryer set is about $2,500 to $3,000, but you definitely don't have to shell out thousands just to wash your work clothes and bedding once a week!

If your goal is to buy a serviceable pair of machines that do the job, then a used washer and dryer is your best bet.

The Cost of a Used Washer and Dryer Set

For a used washer and dryer, your price range is on the lower end, from about $200 for an older set to $2,000 for a high-end, lightly used set.

Where to Buy Used Washer and Dryer Sets

There are several places you can look for local sales of used washers and dryers.

If you live in an apartment community, ask the manager if they know anyone who wants to sell their washer and dryer. Often, people who are moving to a place with its own machines or no connections will sell on their way out.

Should You Pay for Delivery?

If the seller is willing to deliver the machines to your house, it might be worth paying $20 to $50 for delivery. After all, most people don't have a truck or trailer that can carry two laundry machines. This is also true if you buy your machines through a marketplace or retailer that offers used appliances.

If your seller can't deliver the machines, consider renting a truck or trailer using the same budget to deliver them to yourself.

Hooking Up Your Washer and Dryer

Once your washer and dryer are dollied up to your apartment, the final step is installing them. Don't worry, this is something anyone can DIY with the right parts and tools.

  • Arrange the washer and dryer in the right positions. The dryer side has a vent hole and the washer side has hot and cold water leads.
  • Use a clamping wrench to firmly attach the hot and cold water leads to the washer using the attached hoses. Turn the valves and make sure your lines don't leak.
  • Connect the dryer exhaust duct (a flexible, shiny silver tube) to the vent hole. Secure the duct tightly so it doesn't blast dryer lint.
  • Now, it should be safe to plug in both machines. The dryer's outlet is often extra large, as the dryer needs a special circuit to provide more power.

It's as simple as that. Arrange, connect, power, and you can start washing clothes at home.
